Welcome, I’m JP Pulkkinen, the founder of Tough Tones. I’ve made music practically all my life and started a recording business with budget gear half a decade ago. I founded this blog because I wish something like this existed when I was starting out my musical journey. The questions I had might be similar to yours today. Do these questions ring a bell?

About Me: JP Pulkkinen
Like mentioned above, I am the founder of Tough Tones. I’ve been in bands and made music on my own. I started a recording business years ago in Oulu, Finland. I’ve gone to audio school, but most of my learning have happened in my home studio and with endless tutorial videos online.
When it comes to my own music, I basically do it all in my own apartment without any fancy gear or acoustic treatment. I like to make hard hitting modern melodic metallish music. You can find my music here.
My approach to music is more from passionate than technical perspective. I want to create songs that generate feelings and I want those songs to sound as good as possible.
I’m a person who doesn’t like to do work just for works sake. Not that I’m not ready to do the work that’s required or sweat for what I love, but it’s insanity to do more than you need to just to look busy.
I don’t like to learn technical insights of equipment or instruments. They’re meaningless to me. All I care about is to get the results that I’m after, with a simple and effective workflow, that allows me to enjoy the process and make artistic choices on the way. This mentality has helped me to narrow my focus on the music itself.
That’s why I want you too to concentrate on the right things and get the best possible results with the gear you already have.
