Vocal Microphone Comparison:
29€ Mic VS 400€ Mic
What’s the difference between cheap and expensive mics? In this video I want to demonstrate how exactly 29€ mic differs from 400€ mic. The other one is almost 14 times more expensive. Mics in this vocal microphone comparison are t.bone SC 300 and Shure SM7B. The latter is a very popular vocal mic.
This comparison contains both raw signal of both of the mics as well as mixed material. You can hear how the mics sound plugged straight into an audio interface and when they’re mixed in a song.
Of course the SM7B by default is better, because it’s pricier. It has to be. Or is it quite like that?

I claim that the t.bone SC 300 isn’t at least 14 times worse than it’s pricier friend. In fact, at times they sound almost the same. Sometimes the t.bone can come across as better sounding. How can this be?
Yes, microphones has differences. There are microphones from bright to dark and all the way to different purposes. However, the differences aren’t that big, and at times they can be very very subtle.
With this vocal mic comparison I want to show you that a more expensive mic will not automatically improve the quality of your recordings. Not a single mic in this world – no matter how expensive – will dramatically improve your recordings.
What you need to do instead is to change your mindset from “How can I get all this fancy and expensive gear I need” to “How can I get the best out of the gear that I have?”. More expensive gear doesn’t guarantee better quality or even any improvement.
The answer is to know what to do to get the best out of your current gear.
